Working with Providers

Working with a certified TRE provider can make your practice safer, more effective, and more accessible, especially if you have any of the conditions mentioned in this section.

When to Work with a Provider

Consider working with a provider if:

  • You have any physical or mental health condition requiring modifications
  • You are new to TRE and want proper instruction
  • You have a history of trauma (any type)
  • You struggle with self-regulation or get overwhelmed easily
  • You have any physical limitations or injuries
  • Intense or difficult experiences arise during self-practice
  • You are not seeing benefits or are feeling worse
  • You want to deepen your practice beyond the basics
  • You simply feel uncertain and want guidance

What Providers Offer

  • Proper instruction in the exercises with modifications for your body
  • Observation and guidance during your tremor process
  • Help developing self-regulation skills
  • Personalised modifications for your unique situation
  • The co-regulation of a calm, grounded presence
  • Support for processing whatever arises
  • Collaboration with your other healthcare providers when needed
  • Answers to your questions and concerns

Finding a Provider

  • Visit traumaprevention.com (the official TRE website)
  • Use their provider directory to search by location
  • Look for certified providers (Level 1 certification minimum, higher levels for complex cases)
  • Many providers offer online sessions if in-person is not available
  • Some providers specialise in particular populations (pregnancy, trauma, chronic illness, etc.)

Cost Considerations

  • Provider fees vary but are often comparable to massage or other bodywork
  • Some providers offer sliding scale fees
  • Some insurance may cover if the provider is also a licensed therapist
  • Consider even 1–2 sessions as an investment in safe practice
Working with a Provider Is Wisdom, Not Weakness

Recognising when you need support and seeking appropriate guidance is itself a form of self-regulation. A skilled provider ensures you practise TRE in the way that best serves your unique body and nervous system.

Listening to Your Body

Ultimately, the best guide is your own body. TRE emphasises developing trust in bodily wisdom. This includes wisdom about when to practise, how much to practise, when to modify, and when to rest.

Signs your body may be asking for modification or a break:

  • Resistance or dread about practising
  • Consistently feeling worse after sessions
  • Feeling depleted rather than replenished
  • Physical pain during or after practice
  • A clear sense that now is not the time
  • Instinctive knowing that something needs to change

Trust these signals. TRE is a tool in service of your wellbeing, not an obligation to fulfil regardless of how you feel.

Trusting your modifications:

  • Your body knows what it needs better than any guide or practitioner
  • If something doesn't feel right, modify or skip it
  • There is no "correct" way to do TRE that overrides your body's feedback
  • Modifications are not failures: they are intelligence
  • The goal is sustainable, beneficial practice, not perfect adherence to prescribed exercises

Pre-Practice Check-In

Before each TRE session, briefly assess whether it is a good time to practise:

Ask yourself:

  • Am I physically well enough to do the exercises?
  • Am I in a relatively stable emotional state (not in crisis)?
  • Do I have time for the full session including rest?
  • Is my environment safe and private?
  • Do I have access to self-regulation tools if needed?
  • Does my body want to practise today?

If you answer "no" to any of these, consider whether to proceed, modify, or postpone.

Core Principle

Always stay within your window of tolerance. TRE should feel challenging at times, but never overwhelming or destabilising. If you're unsure whether TRE is appropriate for you, consult with healthcare providers, start with a certified TRE provider, begin gently with shorter durations, and have professional support available.
